It is a life-long autoimmune disease that makes people dependant on multiple daily injections of insulin to survive. Those affected are at risk of devastating health complications like blindness, kidney disease, heart failure and amputation. In Australia, over 140,000 children and adults have type 1 diabetes. It is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and it occurs more frequently than cancer, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy. On the rise in Australia and around the world, most newly diagnosed cases are in people less than 15 years old. JDRF's mission is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and it's complications through the support of research and is consequently, the world's leading non-profit, non-governmental contributor of funds to diabetes research. Over the past 40 years, JDRF has directed more than $1.4 billion to diabetes research and the organization has been instrumental in every major breakthrough in diabetes research since 1970. http://www.jdrf.org.au/
